Bed in Summer (A letto d’estate)

In Winter I get up at night

And dress by yellow candle-light.

In summer quite the other way,

I have to go to bed by day.

D’inverno mi alzo la notte,

E mi vesto alla luce gialla della candela.

D’estate è tutto il contrario,

Mi tocca andare a letto di giorno.

I have to go to bed and see

The birds still hopping on the tree,

Or hear the grown-up people’s feet

Still going past me in the street.

Mi tocca andare a letto e vedere

Gli uccellini saltellare ancora sull’albero,

Oppure sentire i passi dei grandi

Che se ne vanno ancora per la strada.

And does it not seem hard to you,

When all the sky is clear and blue,

And I should like so much to play,

To have to go to bed by day?

Ma non vi pare brutto,

Col cielo così chiaro e azzurro,

Quando si vorrebbe tanto giocare,

Dovere andare a letto di giorno?
